Northland Design and Build is a family-owned business with over 100 years combined experience in homebuilding, cabinetmaking, and interior design located just outside of Portland, OR. At Northland, we’re not your average Joe contractor — we’re an experienced team of designers, project managers, and craftsmen who collaborate through each phase of your home remodeling project. This in-house approach is what sets us apart in the industry, allowing for greater efficiency through firsthand quality, cost, and timeline control. Combine all that with our family values and fun-loving attitudes, and you’ve got a builder with an edge above the rest. (Don’t believe us? — check out our accolades on Houzz!)

Rod and Gina Loewer, along with two sons, a son-in-law, and top-notch employees who feel like family, are the heartbeat of our company. Needless to say, family values are an integral part of our operations. For Northland, this doesn’t simply mean putting up with family in order to keep business afloat but capitalizing on the full spectrum of Enneagram personalities we seem to have on our Northland team in order to provide the best customer service and quality end result possible. At Northland, we bring our family to yours, collaborating on design and communicating through build so that we can bring that tailor-fitted dream space stuck in your head to fruition. Our designs are always based around the lifestyle of you and your entire family – all the way down to your pets (because they’re family, too). We consider practicality, functionality, and personality so that each remodel is a reflection of our clients, not our designer. Operating through our core family values, we seek to bring you not only a fantastic product, but a pleasant and transparent process getting there. All this to say, family isn’t just a part of our business— it is our business! We’re the family that builds for yours.

Our business begins with Rod’s father, John, who taught Rod the ins and outs of the trade. Growing up working construction with his dad, Rod opened his own cabinet-making company in his 20s. This evolved into an early version of Northland, a custom home builder with Rod at the forefront. As Rod and Gina’s 5 kids began growing older, Gina endeavored to take on interior design as her trade, eventually joining forces with Rod in the business. Brian and Keegan, two of the Loewer sons, grew up working alongside their dad, passing down generations of valuable trade knowledge. Beginning training in construction in their teens, the boys now lead the build side of the business as project managers. Gina now has a team of designers, all who comprise the design side of the business. Then there’s Jamie, son-in law to Rod and Gina, who bridges the gap between the two as a project coordinator. With humble beginnings, Northland has evolved over generations in order to become your premier Portland-metro area design and build company.

President / Lead Project manager

From humble beginnings of working construction with his father in his teens, to owning his own cabinet shop, to later building multi-million dollar custom homes, our experienced builder has a vast expanse of knowledge and an astute awareness for detail. Working as a Portland Fire Fighter for 30 years, Rod has also learned the art of time management and the value of hard work. His understanding of the importance of safety makes him thorough and detailed on every job. If we could choose one word to describe Rod it would be trustworthy. Or hard-working. Or maybe reliable– okay, so we can’t choose just one…

Vice President / Lead Designer

Every all-star team has a wild card. Meet Gina, our fearless designer with an edge. Gina’s expertise has come from many walks of life, such as owning her own interior decorating and design business, or later working side by side with Rod as Northland grew. Inspired by her own experience of cooking countless football dinners for her sons’ teams, Gina has a natural intuition for what it takes to create a functional, well-operating kitchen with practical traffic flows. Her awareness of local, modern design and experience from European travels are constantly inspiring Gina’s keen eye for cutting edge design– from the rustic tones of Tuscany to the industrial &are of downtown Portland. But beware! her passion for design is contagious. You may find yourself having way too much fun while working with her.

Judy, was hired as our new in-house accountant, or as she calls it, a “historian– documenting the history of all things financial.” After earning her degree from Oregon State, Judy worked in Boston for a large accounting ‘rm. Taking a bit of a break to move back to Oregon and to raise her family, Judy returned to accounting at a ‘rm in Portland before coming to Northland. She also handles the books for a popular local coffee shop in Newberg. But Judy doesn’t spend all her time with her head in books! She also loves to garden, compost, ride horses, and hike whenever she can, especially if it’s in the Mt. Hood area. One summer, Judy’s love for adventure took her to Israel where she participated in the excavation of a biblical site! Last of fun facts about Judy, but of course not least, is… you guessed it! She’s a dog person. In fact, when we asked her that question she responded with a quote from Edith Wharton: “My little dog– a heartbeat at my feet.” Judy’s little heartbeat is a Havanese named Winston.

Design Coordinator

You know that saying “like a well-oiled machine”? Well, if Northland is a machine, Heidi is that oil. As office manager, Heidi handles tasks such as billing, purchasing, payroll, organizing, ordering– you know, all that boring stuff that makes a company run. Speaking of running, Heidi is an avid runner, having done countless marathons and half-marathons. It’s no wonder she’s such a go-getter in the office! Her experience comes from a Business degree earned at University of Arizona, along with client management and marketing experience gained before landing at Northland. When not working or running, Heidi is probably watching her kids play sports. While Heidi used to be a cat person, working for Northland has converted her into both! She even went so far as to get her own Goldendoodle

Project Manager

We know what you’re wondering — is being family a prerequisite for our project managers at Northland? Well, meet Tom. Tom found his home at Northland after a career change, going from wildland firefighter and EMT to a field technician on our construction team. As a field tech, Tom found his passion for finish work and, after a few years in the field, worked his way to project manager. As a former lacrosse player at SOU, Tom likes to stay active by backpacking with his wife. Though no pets of his own, Tom definitely identifies as a dog person.

CAD Drafter

Don’t you hate when someone has a great idea but you just can’t picture it in your head? Well, that’s where Natalia comes in. As our in-house CAD drafter, Natalia takes your designer’s brilliant ideas (or yours!), and puts them into physical conceptuals, making that imaginary dream space just a little more real. With a Bachelor in Architecture from Costa Rica and experience working in government, commercial, and residential construction projects, Natalia’s favorite aspect of her job is seeing the evolution of a project from concept to construction. Lastly, Natalia’s other job title is mom to her two kids and dog-mom to a boxer named Gracie.

Project Manager

Second of the Loewer sons, Brian’s considered one of our Renaissance men out in the field. With experience in construction since his teens, plus working for a few years at a hardwood distributing company, Brian’s knowledge on job sites makes him one of our lead foreman. While Brian may be an expert in many aspects of the construction process, his expertise and attention to detail on painting projects are hard to match! With an eager attitude and hard work ethic inherited by his parents, Brian makes for an integral part of the construction team.

With experience ranging from years spent in the insurance industry to working in a tile showroom, Alicia has come to be a valued designer on our team. Additionally, she has a Bachelor of Business Administration, an Associates in Interior Design, and a Certificate in Design for Accessibility and Aging in Place. As one of the faces of design, Alicia’s favorite aspect of her job is helping clients realize their home’s potential. With expertise in age-in-place design, Alicia always prioritizes universal and accessible designs that serves the client both now and in future. When Alicia isn’t planning out her clients’ dream space, she working on transforming her own 90s house of oak and mauve into a modern class — that is, when she’s not attending her two kids’ soccer or softball games.

As one of our head designers, Alyssa’s job description includes anything from meeting with clients about details of their project to consulting with our in-house drafters in order to develop conceptual and technical drawings. A gal all about design details, Alyssa follows projects from start to finish, constantly communicating with clients to meet their needs– a place where her BA from PSU in Communications comes in handy! But perhaps Alyssa’s greatest expertise comes from her experience working in one of Portland’s most prominent countertop and tile showrooms– also where she first met our head designer, Gina! Having started as a humble Design Consultant, Alyssa worked her way up to Showroom Manager in just six months– a clear indicator of her vast knowledge on countertops, quartz, tile, and more. With Alyssa’s ability to educate clients on details such as which countertops will hold up to a busy family over the years or what tiles are the most slip-resistant, making them ADA friendly, we find her expertise here at Northland invaluable. But while we could go on about Alyssa, we can’t forget to mention her other half– a 9-year-old happy black labby named Echo (you can bet Echo was quickly welcomed into the Black Labs Club at Northland HQ).

Project Manager

Taking after his father and grandfather, Keegan has been in construction since his teens, working for Northland since he was in high school. This has given him an arsenal of experience in all things construction–from laborious demolition to delicate finishing touches. Keegan is more than just a simple laborer–he does everything, including prep for subs, framing, carpentry, painting, and whatever else we ask. He’s our go-to guy to get things done. Keegan’s compliant demeanor brings composure and efficiency to the Northland team, and establishes confidence in our clients. Whether you need him to install a new refrigerator or climb into a creepy crawlspace with a tiny flashlight, he’s your man! And if you have a dog on the job he’ll always be sure to scratch its belly or throw the ball for it during the workday–no questions asked.

Design Liaison / Project Manager

Though a new face here at Northland, Jamie isn’t new to us altogether. Believe it or not, we first met Jamie when he was fresh out college, having earned his Bachelor’s in Exercise Science from George Fox University. A personal trainer at the time, Jamie got to know Rod and Gina while working at their local gym. However, having worked construction with his dad in his teens, Jamie later left personal training for a career in Disaster Repair (aka fire and water restoration), where he spent 6 years learning project management, estimating, mitigation, customer relations, and so much more. Jamie’s experience has made him an expert at communication, meaning he’s able to efficiently mediate between the varying teams within a company. For us, that means Jamie is the go-between for the design and build sides of things. This communication ensures both teams are coordinating all aspects of your project as effectively as possible! As if these qualifications weren’t enough, Jamie’s also an avid Spartan racer, having recently completed his first Ultra race (that’s over 30 miles and 60 obstacles through the mountains!). Being newer to our team doesn’t stop Jamie from feeling like family. In fact, he really is family– in 2018 he married the bosses’ daughter! But perhaps more importantly, Jamie is also dog-dad to Olive and Otis.
